NIMEX5P

NIMEX5P

The plastic material NIMEX5P ® especially developed for Nigura Metzler for use in ophthalmic optics combines the most important properties for the manufacture of high-quality spectacle frames and sunglasses in one material.

NIMEX5P ® stands for 5 exceptional properties which make a spectacle frame or sunglasses a permanent companion for every day:
1. High bending strength and break resistance
(durability and wear resistance)

2. High UV resistance (does not fade)

3. Exceptional weather resistance (wearable at all times)

4. Extreme light weight (high comfort in wear);
NIMEX5P ® is the lightest mechanical thermoplastic of all.

5. Very high resistance to chemicals (easy to clean)

A plastic which sets new standards

NIMEX5P

NIMEX5P ® is a transparent polyamide. It is a plastic, which can be processed thermoplastically, on the basis of aliphatic and cycloaliphatic components (organic chemical compounds of carbon and hydrogen). NIMEX5P ® does not contain any plasticisers and is free of aromatic hydrocarbons.

NIMEX5P ® is in particular characterised by its clear transparency (similar to glass), its resistance to chemicals, its bending strength, toughness and stiffness as well as its high inflammability and its low water absorption capability.

Spectacle frames and sunglasses made of NIMEX5P ® set a new standard in injection moulded plastic frames.

NIMEX5P ® is a registered trade mark of Nigura Metzler Optics International GmbH.

1. Bending strength and break resistance

NIMEX5P

The dynamic strength of NIMEX5P ® was tested by a mechanical changing load. In this test, no stress cracking occurred even after 10 million alternating bending cycles. NIMEX5P ® thus has an extremely good dynamic strength.

NIMEX5P ® was furthermore tested for its resistance to stress cracking in extensive trials under ISO 4599 (the so-called bent strip method). In this test, in particular the resistance under the influence of defined chemicals is examined.

The bending strain (MPa) was > 15 for all chemicals tested, an extremely high value.

Spectacle wearers and sunglass wearers profit from these benefits of NIMEX5P ®:
· no material fatigue even when worn daily for many years, that is, also
· no risk of breakage
· no cracking
· high material stability even in extreme situations e. g. during sports

Resistance to 2. UV radiation and 3. Weather influences

NIMEX5P

NIMEX5P ®‘s unique material composition makes it exceptionally resistant to
UV radiation and weather influences. The service life was checked inter alia by a so-called fast weathering test under ISO 4892 (filtered xenon-arc light). Even after more than 10,000 hours of uninterrupted exposure to xenon-arc light at temp-
eratures of 65°C, the mechanical and optical properties of NIMEX5P ® did not show any noticeable changes.

The advantages are clear:
· no colour fading
· no cracking; the material does not become brittle and
· so maintains its shape stability
· spectacle frames and sunglasses made of NIMEX5P ® can be worn under any
conceivable weather conditions and on holiday without any loss of quality
· even if the NIMEX5P ® spectacles/sunglasses are left on the dashboard of a car in summer,
they do not lose their colour

4. Light weight

NIMEX5P

In comparison with conventional plastics, NIMEX5P ® excels by its low density and thus its unique light weight. Very thin and so very light frames and frame components can be manufactured thanks to the combination of its high bending
strength and its low weight. NIMEX5P ® is thus the lightest engineered thermo-
plastic of them all.

What does this mean for the wearer:
· very light spectacle frames and sunglasses
· high comfort in wear
· no pressure marks
· filigree frames with very thin rims and equally with a high
· wear resistance.

5. Resistance to chemicals

NIMEX5P

Environmental pollution, aggressive substances at work and the improper use
of cleaning materials can cause strain and damage to spectacle frames and sunglasses in some cases. NIMEX5P ® shows very high resistance to a plurality of aggressive chemicals thanks to its exceptional material properties.
These chemicals include petrol and diesel fuel, 10% acetic acid, 1% nitric acid, coolant (1:1) as well as various lubricants.

The tests were carried out under ISO 527. After being stored in different chemicals for 5,000 hours, the material specimens were checked with respect to their  mechanical properties.

The frames showed:
· a long service life
· high suitability to everyday wear (also at work)
· very good compatibility towards cleaning agents
